May 31st, 2008 by

Compete April 2008 Search Share

Compete makes it a quadfecta! No real surprise, the latest search engine
share stats

out from Compete
show Google has hit a new high — just as did previous
stats out this month from
Hitwise,
Nielsen and
comScore. Plus, an
interesting look at how much search traffic Microsoft’s Live Search Club
generates.

NOTE: ON THE PIE CHART ABOVE, AOL’S LABEL IS SHOWN OVER THE "ASK" SLICE AND THE ASK FIGURE SHOULD BE 3.5%.
THE PIE SLICE PROPORTIONS THEMSELVES ARE CORRECT. SORRY I DON’T HAVE TIME TO FIX
THE LABELS NOW!

Microsoft Burns Book Search - Lacks “High Consumer Intent”

May 31st, 2008 by

Wow. Earlier this month, I
heard Microsoft
execs highlight
Live Search Books
as a key advance they were doing in search. Today,

news
that the site along with
Live Search
Academic
are being closed next week, since they lack the "high consumer
intent" that Microsoft is now focusing on. So much for trying to seem like the
much-needed "good" alternative to Google. From Microsoft’s blog post:

May 31st, 2008 by

Remember when AOL released private search information back in August of 2006? Well, that story is now back in the news, after a two-year hiatus. Ars Technica reports that a play has been created around one of those searches, specifically searcher number 927. The play is named “USER 927: U are what U Seek” and is coming to a theater in Philadelphia on June 6th.

Here is the play’s abstract:

Google’s Safe Browsing Diagnostic Tool

May 31st, 2008 by

A week ago Google announced the release of a safe browsing diagnostic tool. To use the tool, just append a URL to the end of http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=.

For example, to test this site, you would enter http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=http://searchengineland.com/. Google will then return four sets of security information about that page.

Feedburner to Roll Out Adsense for Feeds, What Took Them So Long?

May 31st, 2008 by

Feedburner is announcing that Adsense for feeds will finally be rolled out next week for a few selected publishers, before a full launch soon.  For publishers with existing Feedburner Ad Network account, premium CPM ads will now appear alongside contextually targeted ads to fill up the rest of their ad inventory.

That means you get the best of both worlds: a dedicated Google sales force that knows how and why to sell onto your content, with the added revenue that full back-fill coverage provides. And with AdSense, you’ll know that your back-filled ads are using the strongest contextual ad engine, ensuring the most relevant and profitable ads are delivered to your subscribers. And yes, ads are also sold via Google’s AdWords program.

To get into the Adsense for Feedburner, publishers must already have an adsense account. It will be integrated into individual publisher’s account management setup in Adsense. Adsense members who want to run ads on their Feedburner feeds must set up their Adsense channels for “placement targeting” to ensure that advertisers can target their specific syndicated content.

We’ll update on more of this once it gets released for public consumption. If you are one of those selected to test the Feedburner for Adsense, we would love to get your feedback.

Blended Search : How B2B Companies Can Benefit

May 31st, 2008 by

There’s a craze sweeping the search engine marketing world, but thus far B2B marketers have been slow to catch on. In 2007, the leading general search engines (Google, Ask, Yahoo, MSN) introduced a new feature to their search engine results pages (SERPs): blended results.

Blended search (also known as universal search) presents a new opportunity for marketers, and optimizing your content to appear in blended search results is not as difficult as you may think.
